Hi,
This is a question by one of my friends, feel free to read it and if you would like to help or know someone who can, please email me back.
I am totally blind and had aan ankle injury resulting in ankle instability and a torn ligament, my Doctor wants to do surgery for ligament deficiency, grafting on a new tendonn. I'm worried because the recovery time is 2 or three months without putting weight on my right foot and I'm very worried how I'll manage because I've never heard of a blind person using crutches, etc. Is there anyone who's blind who's had a smilar surgery out there who could tell me what they had to do and how they managed?"
Hi,
I, like you, know nothing about the topic, but have a super clumsy friend who is always falling off of, in to, over, or otherwise putting her ankles in the position of doing things that they were never made to do. She has spent plenty of time on crutches, so perhaps, may be able to help your friend. Her ID on here is 12045. She has not logged in on the zone since creating the account, but I do believe would log in to respond to an e-mail if she received one in her innbox telling her she had mail on here.
Put something intelligible in the subject line and she won't blow you off.
Best of luck to your friend!
Amber
I'm close enough to ttotally blind and have been on crutches more times than I care to count.
Basically, the important thing for your friend to remember is to slow the hell down. lol I got so confident once that I almost toppled myself. lol
Seriously though, The good thing about crutches is you can sort of use them to feel your way. The challenge will be if she has to use sighted guide. Familiar areas shouldn't pose too much of a problem so long as she slows down. I can't emphasise that whole slowing down thing enough.
Going up and down stairs will be the worst part. Honestly, when I was at home, I'd just sit on my butt and scoot down the stairs. That doesn't work so well in public so honestly, while it can be done, I would really advice her to find elavators in public whenever possible.
I can't think of anything else off the top of my head but I'm sure something will pop up around 3 in the morning or so. If it doesn, I'll post here again. lol
Good luck to your friend.
